This project is an illustrated children’s picture book inspired by the Scottish myth of the Blue Men of the Minch—mysterious, sea-dwelling figures said to inhabit the waters between the Outer Hebrides and the Scottish mainland. According to folklore, these elusive beings would emerge from their underwater caves to challenge the captains of passing ships to rhyming duels, dragging those who failed beneath the waves.
Although I grew up on the Isle of Lewis, I only discovered this myth in 2022. Intrigued by its rich, underexplored narrative potential, I began developing a story and accompanying illustrations to reimagine the legend for a young audience.
The project blends original writing with visual storytelling, featuring an adapted version of the traditional rhyme woven into the narrative. The goal is to celebrate Scottish folklore through a modern, engaging format that introduces a new generation to this lesser-known tale.
