Illustrated Awareness Campaign – Fox Hunting and Wildlife Crime
Christmas Card Series | Hand-Painted & Digital Collage
Christmas Card Series | Hand-Painted & Digital Collage
This project was developed in collaboration with the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and the University of Portsmouth. The creative brief focused on producing a series of illustrations aimed at raising awareness around wildlife crime.
With a strong personal commitment to animal welfare, I chose to spotlight the issue of illegal fox hunting—an activity I have actively protested in the past. Recognising Boxing Day as a traditional day for hunts, I reimagined my illustrations as Christmas cards. This approach allowed the work to engage viewers during a festive season when the message might be most impactful.
The cards were designed to be visually appealing from a distance, such as on a mantelpiece while revealing a more powerful and unsettling narrative upon closer inspection. Each piece juxtaposes the cheerful aesthetic of the holiday season with the harsh realities of fox hunting, evoking discomfort to highlight the cruelty behind the tradition.
The illustrations were created using a combination of hand-painted watercolours and digital collage techniques in Adobe Photoshop. The photographic elements were sourced from reputable activist groups, including the Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, and West Midlands Hunt Saboteurs, ensuring the visuals remain grounded in real-life events and advocacy.
