Pop-up Stall Concept – RSA Student Design Awards: Signalling Change
Design Solution for Inverness Train Station
This project was developed in response to the 2023 RSA Student Design Awards brief titled “Signalling Change”, which posed the challenge:
“How might we tap into the potential of train stations so they become spaces that amplify and influence positive behaviours?”
My concept focused on Inverness Train Station and the surrounding community, drawing from local insights gathered through interviews and observations.
The proposed solution is a modular pop-up stall, designed for use by small local businesses. These stalls can be booked in advance, offering artisans, food producers, and other independent makers a high-footfall platform to showcase their work. The design encourages community engagement while supporting the local economy.
To attract attention and maintain visual freshness, the stall incorporates interchangeable posters with alternating colour schemes, helping passersby quickly recognise when a new business is occupying the space.
The branding draws inspiration from heritage railway aesthetics, a theme that emerged during interviews with local residents. Many expressed a nostalgic fondness for the charm and character of older train stations—something they felt was missing in the current design of Inverness Station. The use of green and red in the branding palette subtly references traditional railway signage and also evokes the warmth and familiarity of seasonal craft fairs, encouraging emotional connection and recognition.
This concept aims to transform train stations into vibrant community hubs, where design facilitates positive behaviour, local pride, and meaningful interaction.
